Rep. Tracey Mann Opposes House Democrats' Bill That Concedes to China

February 4, 2022

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Tracey Mann (KS-01) released the following statement regarding his vote on the House Democrats' bill that concedes American interests to China.

"China is using the United States as a doormat. The House Democrats' COMPETES Act, which should rightly be called the CONCEDES Act, gives the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) even more opportunities to take advantage of our country. With a $350 billion price tag, the bill is packed with Build Back Better policies that House Democrats couldn’t slip through in previous legislation and neglects to hold China accountable for the origins of COVID-19, their human rights violations, their malign influence on American college campuses, and their aggression toward U.S. allies like Taiwan.

I voted against this partisan bill because it puts the security of our nation at risk and concedes American interests to the Chinese Communist Party.

Americans deserve elected officials who put their safety and best interests first. This toothless, partisan legislation does the exact opposite. As a member of Congress, I am committed to fighting for the best interests of Kansans in the First District - and all Americans."

Rep. Mann cosponsored three amendments to the Concedes Act in an effort to hold China accountable, but all were voted down by House Democrats. The legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives on a 222-210 vote.

As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, Rep. Mann has also called on the Biden Administration to hold China accountable for failing to meet their end of the Phase One trade deal. To date, China still owes American agricultural producers $16 billion in imported U.S. products.
