Rep. Mann Responds to President Biden's Reckless Budget Proposal

March 9, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01) issued the following response to President Biden’s budget proposal.

“President Biden released his budget today - a month late, and it proves to Congress and the American people that he and his administration are not serious about getting our country’s spending and debt crises under control,” said Rep. Mann. “Our country can’t afford more of the government waste that we’ve seen over the last two years. We are $32 trillion in debt, and we are going to spend $10 trillion on interest payments on that debt over the next 10 years, which is more than we’ve spent on debt interest over the last 70 years. We need real leadership before it’s too late.

The President’s budget could do some very simple things to fix problems in America, like:

  • Using unobligated funds from the massive government spending bills that Washington Democrats irresponsibly passed over the last two years.
  • Maintaining Hyde and Helm pro-life protections.
  • Strengthening our safety net for farmers.
  • Decreasing funding for Washington Democrats’ Green New Deal.
  • Decreasing funding for overly burdensome protections of species like the Lesser Prairie-Chicken.
  • Funding measures that would secure our southern border.

In the coming days, the U.S. Department of Treasury will release its explanations of the Administration’s revenue proposals. If history repeats itself, the Biden Administration will attempt to pay for its progressive wish list with trillions of dollars in new tax hikes on Americans, including the highest personal income tax rate since 1986, the highest capital gains tax since 1978, a higher corporate tax rate than Communist China, and an elimination of the longstanding, bipartisan stepped-up basis, an exemption agricultural producers and small business owners often use when transferring their assets from one generation to the next. As I stated in my Commitment to the Big First, I will continue to fight against red-tape and burdensome regulations for agricultural producers, business owners, and all Americans – including protecting the stepped-up basis. In anticipation of President Biden’s revenue proposals including another elimination of the stepped-up basis and new capital gains taxes, I am working with Representatives Bob Latta (OH-05) and Adrian Smith (NE-03) to introduce a resolution to protect the stepped-up basis. Congress must make it clear to President Biden and America that we will not stand for the destruction of the livelihoods of those who feed, fuel, and clothe the world – especially in the name of reckless spending.”
