Rep. Mann Protects Integrity of Taxpayer Dollars

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01) voted to advance H.R. 1156, the Pandemic Unemployment Fraud Enforcement Act. The legislation will extend the statute of limitations for prosecuting fraudulent COVID-19 unemployment claims, allowing law enforcement to recover billons of stolen taxpayer dollars while holding criminals accountable. Rep. Mann released a statement after the vote.
“Kansans in the Big First overwhelmingly support President Trump’s efforts to rein in fraudulent federal spending,” said Rep. Mann. “Five years after the outbreak of COVID-19, there are still nearly 1,700 open investigations into unemployment insurance fraud claims by the U.S. Department of Justice, and more than 157,000 complaints to be investigated. It is estimated that this fraud cost American taxpayers as much as $135 billion. While Congressional Republicans and the Trump Administration work around the clock to uproot fraudulent spending, we need to make sure that there are consequences for bad actors who willingly and intentionally abuse taxpayer dollars. By extending the statute of limitations for prosecuting pandemic fraud claims, criminals and bad actors who abused federal dollars will be held accountable for their actions. We cannot and should not allow criminals to go unpunished. ”
H.R. 1156 passed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 295-127. The bill will now go to the U.S. Senate for further consideration.
